Introducing: Me!

Hey! My name is Simone, and I’m the owner and sole employee of Barbee Design Works. I’m originally from the metro area of Atlanta, Georgia, USA but relocated to New York City in 2017 and am currently based in Brooklyn. I started my business in January 2023, and I’m so excited to be on this journey. I wanted to write a quick blog sharing who I am and what I’m about.

I attended New York University (NYU)’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study where I created my own academic pathway. I’ve always been interested in so many areas and topics that a school that allowed me to craft my own major felt perfect for me. The major areas I studied were psychology and social and cultural analysis (so studying different social and cultural structures). Even though I didn’t pursue them as a major, I also took courses in subjects that I’ve always had hobbies in - hip hop dance, creative writing, and photography. Those were lowkey the most fun courses I took in the whole 4 years!

Speaking of hobbies, there are so many things that I love doing. You can always find me dancing along to my favorite songs - often times BTS and BLACKPINK -, coming up with choreography that no one (except for my boyfriend and cat) will ever see. Like I mentioned, I also love photography and creative writing. And I love a good movie. I’m a HUGE Star Wars and Marvel fan (and I mean MASSIVE). You can also find me geeking out to video games like Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Lego Star Wars (are you catching on here?), and Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you love any of those things like I do, we definitely need to chat!

You might be wondering how I even got into this whole business thing. It started in December 2022. I had been eying a Cricut machine for a little bit. I don’t even remember how it came across my radar, but I had done a little research on the difference between all the models and what you could do with them. At that point, I knew that I wanted one. After mentioning it to my lovely boyfriend a couple times, he got intrigued and bought the Cricut Maker for me as an early Christmas present (he’s the best right!?). I was so excited! The moment it came in the mail, I couldn’t wait to get it out of the box. I set everything up immediately, and began brainstorming ideas of things to make. That Christmas, I made nearly all my gifts with my Cricut - personalized makeup bags, custom journals, a coffee tumbler with my stepdad’s business logo, and more. Everyone was so stunned with what I had made, both friends and family encouraged me to open an Etsy shop. I hesitated for a bit, not even sure of what that would look like or how to get started. After some research, I said what the heck, why not? And so Barbee Design Works was born!

As far as the style of Barbee Design Works, it’s meant to be the opposite of a lot of brands I see out there. I find that while I think so many things are cute, they just aren’t quite for me. At first, I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what I wanted my brand image to be about, but then I had an epiphany. Just design for people like you - I told myself. I’ve never been one for bold and bright colors, lots of patterns, and out there designs. I’ve always been sort of simple. If you looked in my closet right now, you could see that I have a clear color scheme going. Black, navy blue, army green, and the occasional outliers depending on the season. Now, I realize that none of those colors are in my brand colors, I know. Outside of my wardrobe, I like things to be pink. Pink all the way! Some variation of a soft pink is always my way to go (If you took a look at all my electronics, accessories, everything, they’re pink). So, that’s the direction I went in with my brand colors! But the inspiration for how I design is less based on color and more on aesthetic - if that makes sense. Simple and crisp, yet elegant, an odd type of simplicity that you can’t quite put your finger on but you love. And I’ve noticed that there’s a gap in those kinds of things being offered. I want you to be able to look at an item and go “that’s totally for me” and feel secure in your choice, not as if you’re settling for a cute product just because you can’t find anything that’s your style. I want you to enjoy the experience of who I am and my brand, whether you purchase for me or you’re just here coming along for the ride or both.

So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! I’d love to learn more about you and your story - drop it in the comments! And follow me on my instagram - @barbeedesignworks - so we can stay in touch!

Much love,
Simone
